4 Ways to Deal with Jealousy

Occasional feelings of jealousy are to be expected, but when you feel jealous of someone persistently, those feelings can interfere with your happiness and negatively impact your relationships.

Jealousy can come up for all kinds of reasons. When we think someone has more money than us, a better job, more social status, gets more attention from other people. It can also be in relationships that we currently have with our partners. Are they flirting with that person? Did they buy their ex partner better gifts and so on.

If you experience a little jealousy and it comes and goes, that’s fine. But if you find it negatively impacts on your life, your happiness or your stress levels, then use these tips to help get feelings of jealousy under control:

Social Media

Watch Out for Social Media. Facebook can help you stay connected with friends, but it can also leave you feeling envious of what seems to be their perfect lives. When pictures of loving couples, adorable kids and exotic getaways start to stir the green-eyed monster in you, take a step back and think logically about what you’re seeing. No one’s life is idyllic. Your high school friend and her husband looked so happy in that photo but they might argue about money on a regular basis. That sweet baby might keep your college roommate up all night because she’s a poor sleeper, and your coworker won’t share the photos of the sunburn she got that kept her sidelined in the hotel room for part of the trip. Remember that Facebook photos only tell one part of the story and keep things in perspective.

Even myself, we were lucky enough to recently go on a round the world trip for 7 months where we kept our friends and families updated with some amazing photos. We had a great time and amazing experiences as you would have seen from my Facebook page. What you didn’t see is the 46 hour sleep deprived journey home, or the awful accommodation that we endured during one of our nights in Bolivia.. or even the stomach pains that I had in Costa Rica.

Do not compare your lowest points with other peoples highlights

Appreciate your Strengths

Applaud Your Own Strengths. When you begin to envy some talent or skill that someone else has, stop yourself immediately and think of one thing that you do well. Often, jealousy comes from our own feelings of inadequacy. When you build yourself up on a regular basis, you’ll be far less likely to let jealousy get the best of you. It is so easy to build other up and pull yourself down at the same time.  Sometimes we put ourselves down more than we would our worst enemies. Imagine if you had a best friend and they loved you… what would they say about you and your strengths? Also, think about what you do have, rather than what you don’t. Create your own abundant mindset.

Appreciate others

Say Congratulations. Don’t let feelings of jealousy about other people’s accomplishments and achievements hold you back from wishing them well. Even the simple act of smiling and saying Congratulations will help to put you in a more positive frame of mind. Remind yourself that at some point, you’ll be the one who has a chance to shine. By wishing people well and recognising their achievements your telling your subconscious that this kind of achievement is a good thing rather than a bad thing. If we regularly criticise and turn our back on other peoples achievements we will be always looking to bring people down rather than lifting ourselves up.
