The Pain With Chronic Pain
Chronic pain can really take a toll on you, especially when prescription pain management drugs aren’t doing enough to relieve your symptoms. A study published just this year in the journal BMC Geriatrics examined how hypnosis could benefit older people who were dealing with chronic pain while in the hospital. The study included 53 men and women who had been experiencing pain for at least 3 months and in enough discomfort to have problems performing daily living tasks.
The study participants were divided into two groups. Half were treated with hypnosis, and the other half were given daily massages while in the hospital in order to address the pain. The patients were asked to take a daily pain inventory to quantify the amount of pain that they were in.
Alleviate Pain Using Your Mind
At the end of the study, the group that underwent hypnosis had a greater decrease in pain levels than those who received massages. They also experienced improved mental well-being with fewer symptoms of depression. Based on the findings, the researchers concluded that hypnosis was an effective, side effect free solution for pain relief; however, once patients were released from the hospital and no longer undergoing hypnosis, their pain returned. However, there have been other studies about the effectiveness of hypnosis for pain relief.
The study makes it clear that regular hypnotherapy sessions can help mitigate the symptoms of chronic pain, but for the average person, it can be difficult to visit a hypnotherapist often enough to continue to get the benefits of hypnosis. Fortunately, there is a way to still benefit from hypnosis without having to make frequent trips to a hypnotherapist’s office or to participate in Skype or other types of live online sessions. Self hypnosis can often be a wonderful solution.
