Depression is a horrible thing to have to deal with but I’ve got some great tips from helpguide.org that you can start incorporating into your life today
If you are feeling depressed, it affects not only your mood, but your ability to feel motivated to do much of anything. It seems nearly impossible to keep focused on anything or accomplish even the most simple of tasks.
While the situation may feel hopeless, I’m about to give you some tips as found on helpguide.org to help you move closer to shaking off depression.
Tip #1 – Connect with Others
The natural tendency is to isolate yourself from everyone and everything when you’re feeling depressed. Even if you don’t feel like doing so, you must keep connected socially with others. Keep in contact with family and friends.
Even if you stay in touch on Facebook or Twitter, you need to get out there and connect with others. Make plans to catch a movie or do lunch with friends. Force yourself to socialize because it really will help you feel less depressed.
If you don’t have family nearby, caring for and spending time with a pet is relaxing and does wonders for your mood.
Tip #2 – Get Some Exercise
While depression can make you feel like you just can’t get out of bed, you have to force yourself to get up and get going. The biggest battle is just getting up. If you can do that, you can take a walk for 15 minutes. Or clean. Or go to the gym.
Since being depressed drains your energy and makes you feel exhausted all the time, you’ll find that if you give it a chance, exercise can boost your energy level.
The best kind of exercise to beat depression is rhythmic, which gets yours arms and legs moving. Biking, swimming, dancing are all great choices.
Instead of focusing on negative thoughts, instead focus on your body. Really pay attention to how your legs feel as they stretch or the muscles contracting in your arms. Move your focus from the emotional to the physical.
Tip #3 – What Makes you Feel Good?
Has it been a while since you’ve taken the time to lose yourself in a favourite hobby? Take the time to go back and do things you used to really enjoy. It might be playing the piano, painting a picture or reading a good book. Whatever it is, take the time to do things that make you happy.
Eating healthy food is good for both your waistline and emotional well-being. Skip foods that can trigger mood swings like caffeine, sugar and refined carbs. Unhealthy food choices like fries and pastries will lead to a crash, which will make you tired and irritable.
Get yourself on a regular sleep pattern and try to get 8 hours each night. A regular sleep schedule brings a sense of much-needed order to the depressed feelings you are experiencing. By sticking to a set schedule, it also helps you to avoid either sleeping too much or too little.
Get out in the sun! A lack of sunlight can make depression even worse, so get outside and take in at least 15 minutes of sunlight each day.
Tip #4 – Don’t Believe those Negative Thoughts
When you’re depressed, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by negative thoughts. Thoughts such as, “I can’t do anything right,” or “I am such a loser,” may be stuck in your mind.
Rather than listen to this nonsense, begin to challenge every negative thought. Ask yourself for proof that these thoughts are accurate. If someone shared a negative belief about themselves with you, what would you say to them? Remember that these thoughts are clouded with depression and not the truth.
So while you cannot just “will” your depression away, these tips can help you see that there are things you can do to make yourself feel better. Visit helpguide.org to find even more helpful tips to lift your mood.
