According to the blog at success.com, yes, there is a secret to staying motivated. I’m going to share a few key points of the article to help you get there. I’ll also reveal the incredibly simple secret to keeping yourself consistently motivated.
Lose the Bad Attitude
As you already know, your attitude and outlook are everything. If you have a bad attitude, you’ll find those bad days and bad situations come along a lot more frequently. If you look at the negatives in any situation, well, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for and you fail to keep a positive attitude and take on a negative one, you’ll automatically lose your motivation. That’s right. If you take on a bad attitude about the work required to achieve a goal, you will really struggle or may never succeed at all.
Stop yourself from focusing on negative thoughts like anger, resentment or what isn’t working.
Focus on the Positive
In order to turn your motivation around, focus instead on the positives in every situation. Don’t keep dwelling on the idea that nothing is working or going right. Don’t keep trying to figure out how the problem got started or whose fault it is.
Rather, even if things aren’t going the way you want them to, think instead about lessons you’re learning. What positives can you take away from what you think is a negative situation?
Keeping a positive attitude is the only way you have a chance to eventually reach your goal. By only focusing on positives, you’ll be able to make the absolute best of any situation.
In the article on success.com, they run through a bit of an experiment.
You are asked to just start feeling angry. Isn’t it interesting that you can’t feel angry unless you focus on a thought that makes you feel angry? And you can try this with any other negative emotion. Focus on feeling guilty or overwhelmed. You’ll notice that you can’t start feeling negative emotions without first thinking about a situation that made you feel that way.
So the next time you’re feeling frustrated, stressed or just downright mad, stop yourself right there. Ask yourself what is really going on to make you feel this way. What are you focusing on? What are you thinking about? That is awareness. It is also called mindfulness or living in the moment, but you get the idea.
In this moment of awareness, you can choose to have a more positive response. You allow yourself a moment there to acknowledge the fact that these unpleasant thoughts aren’t helping you. Take a deep breath and give yourself permission to take control of the situation.
The choice and responsibility to turn it around is up to you.
The Big, Simple Secret to Motivation
So what is the big secret to staying motivated? It is simply making sure you feel good during the process of achieving your goals. Yes, that’s it.
Feeling good is what keeps you motivated.
When you feel good, you are automatically more motivated to follow through on whatever it is you need to do to accomplish your goals.
This applies to big life goals and small, seemingly unimportant ones.
For instance, you have no motivation to wash the car. However, it makes you feel really good to have a shiny, clean car. Or you have absolutely no motivation to pay down your debt. But even if it means going without an expensive coffee every day, you would feel so incredibly good to be out of debt.
If you can focus on the good feelings of the end result, you will find yourself far more motivated to take the steps to get there.
So give these tips a try. If you are able to keep motivated, nothing can stand in the way of you succeeding at any goal you set for yourself.
