Relationships. They make life worth living. After all, nobody wants to feel all alone in the world.
How can you improve the quality of relationships in your life? What can you do to build closer bonds with those you really care about most?
The following “hacks,” as published on lifehack.org, offer some valuable insights and suggestions on growing closer to your friends and loved ones.
If your relationships aren’t as close as you’d like them to be, maybe you’re not attracting the right kinds of people in your life.
Take the time to do some soul searching to find out what you value most in life. When you know yourself on a deep level, you can begin attracting new relationships with those who share your values.
Evaluate Existing Relationships
Rate all of your existing relationships. High scores will go to those people in your life who accept you for who you really are, are there for you and can be gently but brutally honest with you.
If you find that there are relationships that are not so good for you, it may be time to bow out gracefully. If after taking a closer look, you find there are some relationships filled with conflict or make you feel bad, it may be time to let them go. Why continue on with people who are negative or damage your self esteem?
Relationships that drain you emotionally are not enhancing your life and odds are, that will never change.
More of the Good Stuff
When you find people who make you happy, make you laugh and just make you feel good, spend more time with them. Relationships like that are good for your mind, good for your soul and enhance the quality of your life.
And besides, having fun, positive relationships helps you become a more fun and positive person.
Nurture Good Relationships
Building trust, sharing experiences and keeping close all require consistent work. Take the time and put in the effort to tend to your relationships so they can grow and prosper.
Move good relationships to the front burner because they are just that important. They need to become a priority in your life.
Find reasons to get together such as meeting for lunch or catching a movie. If time is limited, keep in touch with phone calls or shorten visits.
The little efforts result in big pay-offs.
Give of Yourself
Don’t be selfish in your relationships. Give of yourself and expect little or nothing in return. Don’t think in terms of “what’s in this for me?”
If you go into relationships without expecting anything in return, you’ll often be rewarded in ways you cannot begin to imagine.
With that being said, don’t get into relationships where there is no respect for your boundaries. Or to be treated like a doormat. There should be a natural give-and-take without anyone being taken advantage of.
Compromise is Key
Communication in your relationships should be based on compromise, not arguing or disrespectful attitudes of any kind. It’s OK to agree to disagree. We all have slight differences which is what keeps relationships interesting.
But things like always feeling the need to be right or having everything your way is unacceptable. You need to be able to speak openly about differences of opinion and still walk away as friends.
Making improvements in your personal relationships will surely have a positive impact in every area of your life. And if you think about it, building relationships is what life is really all about.
