How would you feel if you didn’t have to spend any precious time looking for things you need? Would you feel more or less stressed with “a place for everything and everything in its place?”
For so many of us, clutter is a real problem. Where do you even begin to get started on clearing your space?
If clutter is a problem, read through this simple decluttering primer, as featured on BeBrainFit.com
Decluttering in 3 Steps
Before you begin, gather all the supplies you’re going to need. This includes plenty of large trash bags, a timer and most importantly, an ambitious attitude!
It’s best to be prepared before starting the job. By being prepared, you won’t be tempted to stop what you’re doing and run to the store, take breaks or lose ambition.
Set the time for 30 or 60 minutes.
It doesn’t seem quite so overwhelming when you know you can stop working after 30 or 60 minutes. When there’s a set time limit, it won’t become a daunting task that you believe will take hours or days to finish.
You can make some real progress even in 30 or 60 minute blocks of time, providing that you really work at it during the time period.
Sort all the clutter into categories such as:
You can certainly hang on to the items that are valuable to your life and happiness. Items such as family heirlooms, photos, or special art projects the kids made for you are heart treasures.
Be brutal with yourself and realize that everything in your space cannot fall into this category.
Make Extra Money (sell)
Are there items that are in good condition and could possibly bring in a few extra dollars if you were to sell them? Would it make sense for you to have a yard sale so you could make extra money from them?
You can feel good about letting these items go if you know that the purchase was not a waste. Besides, who doesn’t need extra money?
Giveaway Items (who else could use this?)
Sometimes it’s just easier to bag up gently used items and clothing and drop them off at a shelter or donation center.
Feel good about the fact that your items are going to be used by folks who really need them. If you end up with items left over from a yard sale, a donation center will gladly take these items off your hands.
Don’t try to resell items that are really dirty, worn or have just plain seen their better days.
Remember that in their heyday, these items served their purpose and earned their value many times over. It’s time to simply throw them out. Doesn’t it feel good?
Just Cannot Decide
Sometimes there are items you just don’t know what to do with. Keep these items to a minimum and box them up. Re-visit the box after a few months and see if you can now decide what to do with them.
Once you set aside items in an “undecided” box, go through the box one more time to see if you can’t actually toss or donate the items.
If you haven’t even looked for anything in that box for months, maybe you really don’t need these items after all.
The process of removing clutter from your space allows you to experience so much more focus, clarity and positive energy in every other area of your life.
Did you know that having too much clutter in your life is more an internal (mind) issue than a physical one? Why do you hang onto things for so long? Why can’t you bring yourself to just throw things away?
